our design heritage
k w y n n's heritage begins in 1910 Berlin. the Mendels — the family behind the brand — began a tradition in design through clothing with atelier Fischbein & Mendel and the built environment with architect Walter Gropius
the Mendels stood at the intersection of modernist Berlin's art and science, where design meant the pursuit of form, function, progress and permanence. at the Mendel Villa, Albert Einstein contributed to the family's cancer research in the Villa Lab, drifting into his piano sonatas echoing through the Villa halls at dawn. the Mendels also brought Einstein and Rabindranath Tagore together in the Villa to integrate scientific, artistic, and philosophical ideals
the family's patronage supported Gropius through his formative Bauhaus years. its physical legacy remains: the striking Gropius-designed staircase in the entry hall of the Mendel Villa in Berlin
the next generations carried this modernist culture west to California. a young Steve Jobs joined Mendel family camping trips as clean lines, function and curiosity found new roots in emerging Silicon Valley
four generations later, the family tradition continues moving forward in Berlin. our apparel is over a century of art, science, philosophy and technological innovation in the making
